The actors in the new trilogy aren't really any worse than the original. In fact, some are quite good. The problem is George Lucas had a lot more creative control this time around. He didn't even direct Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi. And he wasn't such an icon that people couldn't question him back in the day. Harrison Ford could say "You may be able able to write this shit, but you can't say this shit" to Lucas thirty years ago, but no one would dare today. Let's not forget that if Lucas had directed and cut Empire Strikes Back, Leia would have said "I love you" and Han would have replied "I love you, too." The infamous "I know" only came about because of Harrison Ford and director Irvin Kershner.

But yeah, see the further replies to that, you're right, it had more to do with the writing (and directing, as you say).
