I thought Greedo shot first and missed. So Han shot back and killed him.

Han Solo shooting first says that he is always one step ahead of everyone else. Greedo was there to take Solo out and Solo didn't think much of the situation. He tried to talk his way out of it and couldn't, so he got out.
When Greedo shoots first it doesn't say the same thing. It was almost like Lucas was apologizing for Solo by adding that errant shot from Greedo, saying that Solo is a bad guy if he shoots first. He's not a bad guy, he's a smart guy and will do what needs to be done to protect himself.
Not only is there nothing wrong with it, this also changes how we view self serving Han Solo returning to save Luke. Sure, there are other references to his nature, but this one is brilliant, pure Han Solo. It would be the same thing if they changed his "I know" into "I love you too". It's simply not Han Solo.
