I prefer subtitles because they tend to stay as close to the original artistic intent as possible

And I felt pretentious just typing that
But seriously, the voice actor plays a large part in how a particular character comes across to the audience. One voice actor might make a character sound tough, another could make him sound a bit wimpy. Someone could read a female character with a bit of a sultry voice, another could make her sound sweet and innocent, or bitchy, or any number of things. And all this is without changing (the meaning) of a single line of dialogue. It all has to do with what a person's voice sounds like and how they read the lines.
Therefore, watching it with subtitles is truer to the actual vision the creators had in mind for a particular work. The characterization will be closer to how they intended.
Plus, the voice acting usually is better. Voice acting is Serious Business over there, and it shows
Anyway, I feel that way about any movie or cartoon or tv show that isn't in English. I'd rather watch them in their native language with subtitles.

I can't agree that reading subtitles distracts you from what's going on.

Yes, but you see, the languages I'm trying to learn aren't that mainstream.

I don't watch anime much, but generally speaking: of course dubbing isn't always bad

I've never had my enjoyment impaired by either, so I consider them equal. *NM*
