And here's a question I'm going to throw out there: what, exactly, is it that turns this ridiculous B-movie with a less intelligent plot than most Bond movies into such a big classic with a 8.7 rating on IMDB? The similarly themed The Mummy is probably actually the better movie, and that one is just considered an average action movie that happens to star Rachel Weisz, as far as I'm aware.
I'm actually not sure... but MAN. I love those movies.
Lemme think for a minute. First of all, I have to say that I love the way HF acts. He is funny and has great body language/facial expression.
I also have to say that I'm sure it is because I was young when I saw it. I feel the same about Star Wars, and am not sure I would if I hadn't been a kid.
It is a typical 80's movie, but also has things that make it stand out. There is the standard, goofy badassery, but the hero does also have fears and flaws. And seriously, shooting the sword dude was genius (and not in the script). It also has fun, gross stuff, so any young kid would love it (bugs, snakes, blood, a HUGE boulder, people shooting poisonous darts, etc).
I also like the mythological/religious angle.
So, I don't know. I am biased, I'm sure, because it is hard for me to imagine not liking it (like I can with the SW movies).
This one might get some discussion going... we can hope. So I just watched Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Obviously I was always going to miss out on the nostalgia factor. But even so.

Probably the difference between being a great example of the genre and pioneering it. *NM*

I love the Mummy, but one reason why you shouldn't compare the two movies

The latter is debatable, actually. As for the former: yeah, right. *NM*

It's just an illustration of how things can be more than the sum of their parts.
