And here's a question I'm going to throw out there: what, exactly, is it that turns this ridiculous B-movie with a less intelligent plot than most Bond movies into such a big classic with a 8.7 rating on IMDB? The similarly themed The Mummy is probably actually the better movie, and that one is just considered an average action movie that happens to star Rachel Weisz, as far as I'm aware.
Back when Crystal Skull was coming out I warned everyone in my circle of fellow aficionados not to expect greatness. Even Raiders had the flaws. Everyone looks back fondly on the sword vs. whip/pistol fight but no one ever recalls the farcical keystone kops style chase scene right before that.
Smart movies are overrated. It's an extremely unintelligent medium of entertainment, so just stick with fun. That was something Lucas understood back then. And yes, I said Lucas. Speilberg is a hack who gets lucky and whose real skill is attaching himself to self-selling properties. What does he have that is as original as Star Wars? What is he known for besides adapting monster novels and anti-Nazi films? Speilberg plays from the kiddie tees and gets way too much credit for stuff that sells itself. These films worked because in the 1980s, George Lucas knew what fun was, and nailed it on five movies starring Harrison Ford, back when he was credible as a basass and a sex symbol.

This one might get some discussion going... we can hope. So I just watched Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Obviously I was always going to miss out on the nostalgia factor. But even so.

Probably the difference between being a great example of the genre and pioneering it. *NM*

I love the Mummy, but one reason why you shouldn't compare the two movies

The latter is debatable, actually. As for the former: yeah, right. *NM*
