A protagonist is good because it gives the movie direction. You don't HAVE to have one, but it helps. There are good movies without protagonists.

And yeah, I realize Qui-Gon is maybe the best candidate for a protagonist, but he's still... not really. He's not someone the audience identifies with, he doesn't have any character development... he's not a BAD character, I actually kind of like him, but I think he's much more of a mentor/Gandalf figure than a protagonist.
I amuse myself.
