In 1982 I was 13 years old. So when I heard that Han Solo was coming out with another movie, I was there. A friend's mother was a big SF fan and would take us to the R rated movies as long as our parents didn't mind. I had a paper route and cleaned offices on Sundays so I had disposable income.

I think that year may have been the best movie year ever for me. Our little gang went almost every week to see something. Sometimes we went with our families and sometimes just a couple of us would go. I think I went to the movies more that year than any other.

Many of the lines from those movies were repeated so many times that they are a part of our everyday lexicon. For years every time I walked through the front door of my house I'd say, "Home again, home again, jiggidy jig." Need to call home? "Phone home" pretty much sums it up. Playing a game and someone pulls something that puts you in a particularly bad place? "Khan!" shouted with a pointing finger is usually answered with, "You remember me old friend". Static on the TV? "They're hee-re"

There were so many cool movies that year: The Dark Crystal, ET, Conan, Wrath of Khan, Secret of NIMH, Tron, Swamp Thing, Poltergeist, Cat People (Natasha Kinski was hot in that movie), Videodrome, Last Starfighter, The Thing, Beastmaster, and many others. Even in that company, Blade Runner stood out.

Blade Runner wasn't a cutesy kid movie. It also wasn't a dark horror meant to scare you. It was gritty and real feeling to me. For the first time I looked at the future with the mixture of languages on the street, the constant and hovering advertisements, and the dirt in the streets, and thought, 'yeah, it could be that way'. I've seen that look several times since, but that was the first I had seen it in film. Maybe Alien or Outland could be said to have a similar feel, but they were both in space. Blade Runner takes place on our home turf.

The camera work was great. Zhora slowly going through the glass with the bullets ripping through her stuck with me for a long time. Rutger Hauer on the roof with the dove in his hand is an iconic image. Decker takes a drink of the vodka and his blood drips back into the glass is a beautiful shot. The parting shot is also pretty cool. After having made it through, our hero, finally sees the sun for the first time in the film. The killer who doesn't want to kill finally finds the light.

Funny thing is that I've loved this movie for years. I finally showed it to my kids. They said,'most boring movie - EVER'. Oh well, they obviously must have gotten their sense of what is good from their mother.
