Mierin thought they had found a new source of power, not of THE power.

This would mean the Bore was driven through the True Source. I don't remember right now, but doesn't the short story of the moments before the Bore was drilled show 'Meiran' thinking that they found a new source of the power, beyond the One Power? Perhaps this fits if I remember that correctly. I'm typing as I think here...
You are correct, but Mierin thought that the power sensed in the prison was a new power that both men and women could use. Unlike the opposite properties of Saidar and Saidin where men and women weave completely differently, she believed the new power would be woven the same way by men and women, allowing them to do new marvels when they worked together.

How can Rand repair the bore? More importantly, what forms the boundary of the Wheel itself?
