The idea was to reach from inside the Pattern a place outside the Pattern. This was done by drilling a hole through that thinness in the Pattern (probably the thinness was already made by the DO), like a Gateway is made by men or TP users. This special "corridor/Gate" was called the Bore. It makes sense that it is a OP weave, if one can sense it.
That Unravelling is possible was unknown in the AoL. Probably the DO also blocked the Bore open once it was created, so one couldn't simply close the Bore.
I think it definitely makes sense that - if the Pattern made the Dragon the strongest and most able channeler on the world - that the OP will also somehow play a part in defeating the DO in the end. But we will see!

That's because you think of the DO/TP as a specific location outside the Pattern, and you assume that the goal sought by Beidomon's team is in truth the Bore.
Personally, I think the bore is what it got called after the fact only, and Beidomon's team sought to thin the pattern so the other source of energy all around it go be tapped into by humans. I don't think it would make any sense to OP scientists to think of a source like the True Source as being in a specific place beyond the pattern.
In any case, we know from Jordan himself that the AOLers called "the bore" is a global weakness that affects the whole Pattern. It's not really a matter for debate.
How can Rand repair the bore? More importantly, what forms the boundary of the Wheel itself?

No, the Bore was drilled through that specific thinness in the Pattern.
