Demandred? Fanatic-Templar Send a noteboard - 06/07/2010 12:44:56 AM
The man whose most notable accomplishment thus far has been not confronting any of his enemies?

It doesn't create tension if you find out at the end of the series that every seemingly insane action of the enemy was actually a brilliant plan to spread chaos and weaken the pattern, in hindsight.

You need to see the enemy apparently succeeding DURING the series to build up a sense of despair and hopelessness on the part of the protagonists and to thus create tension for the reader.

Again, Demandred is a villain who you consider to be seen succeeding during the series? Ishamael at least appeared and confronted the ta'veren. He set plans into motion to stop them or drive them according to his intentions. What can you hope from Demandred, except that after doing nothing for fourteen books he'll say something like "everything that has transpired here has done so according to my design"?

Once the author has to start convincing people in interviews and blog posts that the Shadow really is winning and that the hero really is "reeling in the last round of a boxing match with one desperate punch left to win the match" then you know the tension hasn't been developed properly.

This is thanks to Moridin, the madman. RJ deliberately went down this path, but the result is that we end up laughing at the villains, rather than fearing them.

What an opportunity lost.

I have no idea why you're blaming Moridin for this... it is the same thing RJ has done to every one of his villains, barring Shai'tan itself. RJ clearly intended to have his villains revealed as the pathetic creatures they are, and this is why they can't really be considered threatening. I have no idea where you get this idea that Demandred is going to be in any way different, nor how Moridin is somehow responsible for RJ's obvious intentions.
