This is either a fantastic point, or there's some little explanation overlooked. Yes, the dream devices should've made them different. It seems pretty clear this is why they were stolen from Sheriam in the first place. In fact, that idea pretty much undermines the best alternative I can think of: that Messy opened a gateway and brought them in the flesh.
