I've only been saying no for years. Cannoli Send a noteboard - 14/10/2012 09:21:43 PM
I've always assumed Ishamael went and corrupted the Seanchan prophesies, but is there proof?

NO!
Just all you channeler wannabes automatically assuming the worst of any Seanchan and assuming that the Seanchan PoV character who thinks the wetlander prophecies are corrupt is not only wrong, but inversely wrong and thus his are corrupted.

As Moiraine notes in tGH, prophecies from the Shadow are as likely to come true as their enemies'. Even the supposedly mistaken prophecy that Graendal read has not yet failed. She is obviously mistaking the Wolf of the prophecy for Perrin, when Lan or Ituralde is a more likely candidate.

Likewise, Moiraine claims that the Aiel are not mentioned in the Prophecies of the Dragon, yet they are in almost the first prophecy Rand hears quoted: she simply did not know they are the People of the Dragon. The difference cited by the Seanchan is that the wetlanders' prophecy does not mention Rand kneeling to the Crystal Throne, which theirs does. It can be as simple as the fact that neither version is comprehensive (and I have nothing to indicate they are, and much suggesting the opposite), and no one on this side of the Ocean understood the significance of the Foretelling to include it. Or it could refer to the same event in different words. For one thing, Rand will almost certainly not kneel before the Throne itself, but before Fortuona. In Seanchan, the Throne is identified with the office in the same way we refer to the White House and the president as one and the same. "Word from the White House is..." and so on. So maybe a Seanchan would refer the same event by saying he will kneel to the Crystal Throne and a wetlander prophet would say he will kneel to "the blood of the hammer" or some other oblique reference. Without both complete copies of the prophecies it is impossible to say one way or another.

As for the ridiculousness of Ishamael basing a strategy on minor alterations of a thousand-year-old prophecy, the less said the better. He has been portrayed as astute enough to grasp the series' theme of misunderstandings and unexpected results, and not try to influence people at that great a remove.

Despite the superstitious actions of many Seanchan characters (all the random Omens) there seems to be truth to the readings of the Omens.
Pay some attention to causality! The Seanchan are more reliant on omens and such, because of the apparently superior predictive abilities of Seanchan channelers.
