He seems very black and White and I feel he wouldn't be able to see Rand as a hero if "for the greater good" was an acceptable viewpoint. With SL and Dark Rand and the fact that IMO perfectly acceptable (as well as a couple of incidences of dubious) "hardening" was seen as evil on Rand's part we see this as a major theme in the book and RJ's characters couldn't have made harder choices and still been the good guys in his world. Despite that, Rand does make hard choices, and is criticised for it, does kill rulers as far ad he knew at the time (Aslasam) and in his eyes people dying because of him and his actions is as bad as him killing them ( a moral stance I sympathise and partially agree with) and plenty die because of that

You just hit on probably the major structural weakness of the series with respect to characters. - 15/01/2013 02:54:59 AM 1240 Views
I think this is why I still enjoy Rand as a character so much - 15/01/2013 03:37:52 AM 1194 Views
There were plenty of hard choices, but they might have been handled better. - 15/01/2013 06:58:30 AM 1353 Views
Though I too have wished for them to make really hard choices... - 15/01/2013 09:37:34 AM 1321 Views
