The only way the Light can win is if the Dragon survives. Therefore they need to kill him. Even if the Pattern could spit out a new Dragon, it would take at least 20 years for that man to gain the ability to channel, by which time the Shadow would have overrun the world and freed the Dark One. There is no indication in the series that the death of the Dragon Reborn would be anything other than catastrophic for the fate of the world.
Moridin's plan is transparent - it always has been.
Didn't RJ say (I cannot remember the source at all - probably in a Tor Q&A, though, so I could be fairly wrong) that the Light doesn't always win - that a draw is possible, and has happened before? The Light might need the Dragon (Reborn) to win, but not having him doesn't mean they'll lose, either.
I always thought the only way for the Dark One to win was to have the Dragon/Reborn actually lose - if he's dead, things will just end up in a draw. That would explain Ishy's strange desire to keep Rand alive for most of the series, only deciding to kill him when it became clear that a draw (with the Dark having no chance of winning) would be better than a flat-out defeat.
Which character (besides Rand) has hurt the shadow the most? (my analysis and your opinion)

Actually there were a couple of versions that happened, and Moiraine came in neither.

IIRC the prophecies don't say anything about whether the DR will win.
