Mat is in the position he is in because he repeatedly steps up and takes on his own shoulders the responsibility for saving other people from their own dangers. He not only fulfills all of his responsibilities, he takes care of others as well. What, exactly is immature about that? What should he have done instead? For that matter, what does he get out of any of this for himself? He is far and away the most altruistic of the main secondary characters.
