So what? fionwe1987 Send a noteboard - 14/11/2009 09:28:49 AM
They are SOLDIERS. WTF?!? They knew what they were getting into and every one of them followed their leaders out of the country and away from their duty. In any event, killing soldiers when you are engaged in hostilities with a country is perfectly acceptable. You put on the uniform or pick up a weapon, you are a legitimate target. As for destroy them, what else do you do with a hostile army? You care about common soldiers so much, what about the common soldiers in Rand's army who will otherwise have to die to fight them if they choose to attack while Rand is off doing the Borderlanders' job for them? Sure, Rand can leave a force to guard them and make sure they cause no trouble, but those are soldiers who will not be with him in the Blight, and will cause his losses to be higher and chance of defeat to be greater.

Why is there an assumption that the Borderlanders will attack Rand? They've shown no hostile intention till now.
HOW? They are hiding like cowards within the Guardian, where he cannot Travel.

Use his Aiel to bring them out. Or threaten to destory their armies if they don't come out.
How many chances do they get? Desertion is a capital offense. Moving the army out of your homeland is an act of war. They are thousands of miles from their duty, engaged in a patently hostile act. Not even the Geneva Conventions would condemn Rand's actions.

Moving your armies out of your country and into another may be hostile, which is why Elayne would have been justified to attack them. We have no proof their occupation of Far Madding is forced, though. They are seemingly welcomed guests!
And they are threatening no one, so they are not hostile.
And what desertion? It isn't like they swore to Rand they will hold the Blight border!
Scaring is BS if you are not prepared to back it up.

And why would the Borderlanders know that he will not carry forward his threat?
And why should Rand take that risk? There are limits to what Nynaeve can do with the well, otherwise there would have been no need for what happened the last time they were in Far Madding. A well is not a permanent license to channel, it is a finite amount of the Power, that WILL run out.

But it is an invaluable tool in an environment that permits no one else to channel!
Its not as if the Borderlanders can hope to keep Rand captive. His armies and channelers far exceed theirs.
There was no major risk in Rand entering, only his fear of being boxed, which, while he has a right to, doesn't justify needlessly killing one of the best forces in the side of the Light.
No such animal.

Indeed. They are not animals.
Only because those soldiers might come in handy. They are soldiers under arms who followed their rulers thousands of miles from their homes and duty. Do you REALLY think they won't obey an order to attack Rand, or seize him and hold him if their rulers command it? If they were IN the Borderlands and Rand had a beef with the rulers, killing the soldiers would be justified! That is why they are SOLDIERS! They have the weapons, the armor and the uniforms and are legitimate targets. As it is, they have had months to turn back or leave if they thought their rulers were wrong. That they have come this far after so long only further absolves Rand.

It absolves Rand of nothing since they have shown no inclination to be hostile.
Invading Army = Legitimate Target. Fact of life.

Except they have invaded none of his territories, and are in a city where they are welcome. They have made no threatening moves, and have only asked to speak with him in a place where he cannot force them into doing what he wants. Seeing that he was prepared to use the OP to force them anyway, that was a good decision, no?
