No, you're wrong, and here are the quotes... Shannow Send a noteboard - 22/11/2009 06:51:06 AM

Travelling TO a place didn't make you suddenly know it in the earlier books. I refer to LoC, at Dumai's Wells.

Mazrim Taim has just arrived by gateway and fought off the Shaido. He is speaking to Rand:

"My lord Dragon," he said in a tight voice, "I would say there are still several hundred Shaido women out there, some not insignificant it seems. And that is not to mention some thousands of Shaido with spears. Unless you truly want to find out whether you are immortal, I suggest waiting a few hours until we know this place well enough to make gateways with some certainty of where they will come out, then leaving."

The Ashaman had Travelled to Dumai's Wells. Yet they could not Travel FROM it until they had spent a few hours getting to know the place.

Dumai's Wells is a frigging huge place! They gated into an area in the middle of the battle, in all the chaos. There's no way the men can know exactly where they came out!

We have prior examples where Traveling to a place makes you know it enough to make a Gateway elsewhere. When Rand follows Sammael from Illian to SL, he creates his Gateway to SL after making a short hop to where Sammael's Gateway was. And Rand did not know the place at all, since he had never even been there before.
Therefore, it seems clear that Travelling TO a place, does not make you know it.

That's why the new Travelling trick in tGS does not make sense.

It does. I wish I could find the previous quote where it is made clear that Traveling TO a place lets you know it.

When Rand Travels to Illian to face Sammael in CoS, he makes his first gateway into the city center. Immediately after that, he makes a gateway to Sammael's palace.

While making this shorter gateway, Rand specifically thinks the following:

"You did not need to know a place at all if you intended to Travel only a short distance."

Do you see the significance? Rand has just Traveled TO Illian. If Traveling TO a place made you KNOW the place, then he should immediately be able to Travel ANYWHERE from there.

So why make the point that you did not need to know a place as long as you only Traveled a short distance?

Then, when he is in Sammael's palace, he is only able to follow Sammael to Shadar Logoth, because he still sees the residue of Sammael's gateway weave, and is able to copy it.
