Did you read that as deliberate? I didn't, but I guess it could be.

Honestly, these chapters did a lot to put a framework around who Harry would become. Being intimidated and controlled in the fashion of the Dursleys resulted in Harry's attitude when he starts to experience freedom at Hogwarts (and his "certain disregard for school rules";). Also has a bit of a chip on his shoulder for anyone that tries to bully him, or his soon to be friends.

Absolutely.

But subconsiously? He's surprised when it happens, but it was his unconcious reaction to getting shoved out of the way. I'm reading Order of the Phoenix with my son at the time too and I'm seeing things with Agro-Harry glasses. :)


I agree. All the pre-Hogwarts magic he does is his subconscious reacting to the world around him (hair growing, sweater shrinking, getting to the top of the school building and glass disappearing). Shame, shame, fear and anger, respectively. But I am not sure I would tie it too closely to the teen rage Harry, although it is true he does have an anger management problem (I see that more in how he acts in class) -- this is after all not his conscious action.
