It struck me how different it is to read the book knowing that Sirius is innocent. It changes the whole tenor of it.
It really does, but then again it'd be strange if it wouldn't. It's kind of hard to remember if I really felt Harry was under a serious threat from Sirius, the first time I read the book...
I like how the magical spills over into the lives of muggles without them realising, a motif that pops up with increasing frequency in later books.
Yeah, that's always fun. It's one of the less realistic parts of Rowling's world, but amusing nonetheless.
I don't know if I am thinking of the same as you are. I was thinking more in terms of threats Sirius (in this case), Dementors and Death Eaters (mainly in the later books).
Why did Sirius laugh when Pettigrew had killed all those people? It isn't clear whether it is an embellishment added by Stan, but if it isn't ...
I took it to be a hysterical reaction, him having reached a tipping point and suddenly finding the idea of Pettigrew the rat sneaking off to the sewers fantastically funny. But I am not sure. It would be interesting to hear what others thought.
I'm fairly sure we're going to get more about that later in the book. He did indeed laugh, I think, and yeah, it isn't exactly a sign of perfect mental stability right then and there.
