I will not be reading Dutch poetry in Dutch, thank you very much. Prose I might handle. Not potery.

Aw. I was going to show you my favourite Hooft sonnet, but... yeah. It might be a bit hard, and the antiquated and inconsistent spelling won't help. :P

I'll post it anyway for anyone who wants to see what they can make of it:


Geswinde grijsaert die op wackre wiecken staech,
De dunne lucht doorsnijt, en sonder seil te strijcken,
Altijdt vaert voor de windt, en ijder nae laet kijcken,
Doodtvyandt van de rust, die woelt bij nacht bij daech;
Onachterhaelbre Tijdt, wiens heten honger graech
Verslockt, verslint, verteert al watter sterck mach lijcken
En keert, en wendt, en stort Staeten en Coninckrijcken;
Voor ijder een te snel, hoe valtdij mij soo traech?
Mijn lief sint ick u mis, verdrijve' jck met mishaeghen
De schoorvoetighe Tijdt, en tob de lange daeghen
Met arbeidt avontwaerts; uw afzijn valt te bang.
En mijn verlangen can den Tijdtgod niet beweghen.

Dat jck den Tijdt, die jck vercorten wil, verlang.


If you want to start easy on Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities or The Mystery of Edwin Drood might be good. Little Dorrit and Bleak House (paradoxically) are both quite happy in the end. For some. Not all.

I've heard good things from others as well about Tale of Two Cities. I might try that.
