Pride and Prejudice, Catch 22, The Good Earth, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, 1984, Lord of the Rings, Slaughterhouse 5, etc.
I have read some of those, love the last three and Catch 22.
If you had to suggest just one, which would it be and why? (please not, "because it's good" )
Catch 22 is my favorite book. It has everything, and I love off-center writing. It doesn't have to be pretty. So much to that book was unexpected for me, and cracking up while still teary is always a good way to throw one off the beaten path.
It's always good to keep us on our toes.
Plenty. I don't refuse most older classics, but there are some newer ones (Atlas Shrugged) that just really turn me off.
Why don't you want to read it?
Having not read it, I can't be sure I'm correct, but it seems to me that I will not enjoy the preachy philosophy of it. And that makes me very apathetic.
Well, if you're not fairly conservative, most of her work won't appeal to you and will be difficult to get through. Atlas Shrugged is slow and preachy, but I found it worth reading at least once.

Oh yes. I even made the mistake of purchasing the new Pride and Prejudice for her.

I really need to read Kundera. I've heard nothing but praise for Unbearable Lightness. *NM*

That is very kind, but I have far too much to do to read non-school books, unfortunately.
