How do you define a classic work or author?

Umm...How's this: Critically accliamed, 2 generations or more ago.

What are your favorite classic works?

E. E. Smith's Lensman series


Have not seen or heard of this before.

Several of Heinlein's works, tops is "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"


Not Starship Troopers?? I have seen his work, but not read it.

Asimov's Foundation trilogy

C. S. Lewis's outer space trilogy

LotR...


These were definitely good, but I read them very early, along with LotR and the Chronicles of Narnia. I've revisited LotR and Narnia since then (as they were probably my two favorite reads from childhood), but think that these deserve a reread as well.

If you had to suggest just one, which would it be and why? (please not, "because it's good" )

Heinlein's "The Number of the Beast", because it is a great introduction to any number of great "Classics".

What have you staunchly refused to read that might be considered a classic?

ERB - all of it. Most of the other "pulp" fiction of that era.


At the risk of sounding ignorant, what does ERB stand for?? So many acronyms out there I can't think of what this one could be.
