Suspension of disbelief is a relative thing

Look at how many people loved the new Star Trek movie and the suspension of disbelief in that story was huge. Cadet to flag ship captain? But millions of people loved including the critics.
Why were people willing to accept an insubordinate, cheating cadet who was barred from even coming on the mission suddenly being made the captain of the brand new flag ship? Because they wanted him to be the captain. Why were they willing to accept the absurd manner that the original crew came together in this alternate timeline? Because they wanted them together. If you just story boarded the movie with no special effects and created it as new story unrelated to original it would be an absurd story line.
If you like the story and the direction it is going then the huge holes in the story get over looked, if you don't they they look like huge holes in the story.

Why is it that so many people hate Dan Brown?

It's not any worse than Robert Jordan's prose. I'd say it's better, in fact.
