Your math up above fails to take into account his Wild Cards work, his other editing projects, signing tours, conventions, or his work with HBO on the show. Not arguing with the conclusion that he's slower than average, but it's not as slow as your math says.

Also, as a writer, you should know that you mean right, not write. You did it twice. ;)


... assuming an average of four weeks for each of those things, it works out to 450,000 words in 116 weeks, or 970 words per day. Much closer to the 1000 per day that you assume a slow writer should be able to do, and that's not taking into account any plot untangling he had to do after writing himself into a corner.
