Regarding quotes or poem lines, they ask permission for those. Legolas Send a noteboard - 05/01/2012 07:48:08 PM
In terms of direct quotes/paragraphs- authors actually do this a lot with works that are in the public domain. It's pretty common to have a quote or a poem written by someone who died long ago at the beginning of a chapter. That's not a parody...

You can easily see this in authors who do a lot of it, for instance having a quote at the beginning of every single chapter (like Cornelia Funke in her popular YA series "Inkworld" ). There's pages and pages listing where all the quotes were taken from and mentioning that the respective copyright holders graciously granted their permission to use them. Except of course for those works that are in the public domain.

I find it difficult to see this as stealing rights from the public. - 04/01/2012 11:15:35 AM 1113 Views
Are you arguing for illegal use of legally protected works? - 04/01/2012 09:34:18 PM 1079 Views
No. I'm saying that keeping works in copyright doesn't stop them from being read, watched, etc. - 04/01/2012 10:24:50 PM 1019 Views
That's not the point, though. - 05/01/2012 01:05:17 PM 1105 Views

You know those Jane Austen parodies? Only because Jane Austen is in the public domain. - 04/01/2012 09:32:20 PM 1149 Views
Parody is actually covered by the legal definition of fair use so doesn't break copyright. - 04/01/2012 10:28:08 PM 1114 Views
