You are making an assumption that Dante named it after Jewish quarters. Tom Send a noteboard - 21/03/2012 11:24:47 PM
I'm not sure that it's a valid assumption to make, given the names given to other portions of Hell (e.g., Caina after Cain), as well as the very evident fact that the ONLY PEOPLE Dante mentions being there are Judas, Brutus and Cassius. We know from earlier on that Annas and Caiaphas are not that far down, so it's not a place for "all Jews".

I don't think that I'm sounding like Dragonsoul - I just think that if the action is merely an attempt to reduce the influence of the Catholic Church the attack is so far off target as to be absurd. Generally speaking, I don't think the rights of a religious majority should be curtailed out of fear that a text from hundreds of years ago MIGHT offend a minority if read out of context. It's really almost as stupid as the way schools in America are afraid of using the word "Christmas".
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

– Procopius

Isn't the fundamental basis of Christanity mutually exclusive to Judaism and Islam? - 20/03/2012 08:33:51 PM 662 Views
That's a really good point that I hadn't considered. I agree. *NM* - 22/03/2012 09:05:00 AM 300 Views

I don't see why that would be the case - 23/03/2012 01:44:49 AM 723 Views
Just because someone is in Hell doesn't mean you should discriminate against them - 20/03/2012 08:23:22 PM 804 Views
Not having read any Dante is kind of hurting my ability to reply to that. - 20/03/2012 10:08:52 PM 1035 Views
Odd, considering you linked the "offending passages" - 20/03/2012 11:54:34 PM 713 Views
Yes, well, I was semi-serious with the "pretending to understand Italian". - 21/03/2012 07:58:35 PM 691 Views
