The first trilogy is the Chronicles. I'm not saying the writing isn't terrible at best, but at least you'd get a better sense of the plot and why people did things if you had read the first trilogy first.
I did read the wiki entry for that series before plunging into this. Sad when the wiki read better than the actual trilogy (and presumably the first trilogy as well)
