Interestingly random list. Legolas Send a noteboard - 10/01/2010 05:55:51 PM
Today I made a list of books I plan to read by the end of this year. After doing the 50-book challenge in 2009, I decided I'd do it slightly differently: rather than aim for a specific number of books, I'd get to work on all the books on my shelf that I've been meaning to read for ages, but through busyness or laziness haven't got round to yet. Also, some of them (i.e. all the Norwegian ones) are books I have to read for my "101 things in 100 days" challenge (see link).

*looks at the 101 things* Which French ones were you planning to read?
The Last of the Mohicans – J. Fenimore Cooper

Huh. I think that's one of those books that has gotten rather out of fashion of late - I don't know if it was ever rated all that highly from a literary PoV, anyway, and adventure stories about cowboys and Indians aren't as popular as they once were.
Dracula* – Bram Stoker

Why the reread, if I may ask? It's a classic to be sure, but to be honest I can't say I found it that impressive...
The Master and Margarita – Mikhail Bulgakov

Clearly I need to read this. I might do a Russian literature year myself, really... started Anna Karenina for the first time, and I need to read Master and Margarita, and probably some Dostoyevsky. Essentially the only major Russian literature work I've read is War and Peace, and that was so long ago I'd really have to reread it.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell* – Susanna Clarke

Excellent.
Dune – Frank Herbert

I keep wavering on whether or not to read this one - huge classic, but a fair amount of people seem to hate it.
Atonement – Ian McEwan

That book is odd. I like the beginning a lot, the second half is very different and not as good, and I don't like the ending scene.
Pretty Monsters – Kelly Link

Can't go wrong with Link.
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde – Robert Louis Stevenson

Bleh. At least it's short. Nice idea for a story, and I guess not badly executed, but... bleh.
My Name is Red – Orhan Pamuk

Have that, started it, really should finish it. It's a fun read, so far, don't know why I got sidetracked on other books.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring* – J.R.R. Tolkien

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers* – J.R.R. Tolkien

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King* – J.R.R. Tolkien

So are these just to make the subsequent reading in Norwegian easier?
