One of the main reasons I want to reread this is that I think I read the proper version when I was 11, but I can't shake the suspicion that I actually read a kids' version. I'm probably confusing it with Frankenstein, though.
I reread Frankenstein a few years ago after about 15 years and I'm pretty sure it wasn't like I remembered it because my memory had just confused it too much with all the bad film versions I'd seen over the years
That might be what I want instead of 1776! Let me know how it is once you've read it.

Which sounds like it is good if flawed.
My copy of Harald's is very small so easy to post. Njál's should be easier to find, but again you can borrow it if you need to.
It is tempting but I do have have ever growing piles of books that I've not read... though if it isn't too big I could probably get through it reasonably quickly.
I've put off reading the sögur for ages because I wanted to learn Old Norse and read them in the original first. But that's clearly never going to happen...
In my case, I got to that conclusion without ever going through the planning to learn Old Norse stage

It has been a while since I read it but I remember it as being fairly descriptive of the areas around the whisky distilleries he goes to.
Did you know there's a graphic novel version? I'd like to pick that up once I've read the original.
I didn't. It sounds interesting but I'm not sure how exactly it would work.

I really enjoyed it, it was probably about 15 or so years ago that I read it but I remember really enjoying it though it felt a bit thrown in the deep endish.

Wasn't it him that got in trouble with the government for "insulting Turkishness"? Those guys really need to sort out their free speech. Hard to believe they're signatories of the European Convention on Human Rights (see Art 10).
Yup, that was him (well not just him, I think a few other writers have had the same problems). To be fair to Turkey, the case was dismissed in court and I think it was only brought against him by a more fringe group. Still, it isn't great for Turkey that they still have a legal offence like insulting Turkishness on the books.
