We can put a man on the moon but looking at job number is too complicated? random thoughts Send a noteboard - 31/05/2010 04:03:38 PM
Why do we as tax payers keep subsidizer loans for degrees that basically amount to vanity degrees and give very little return to society. We should limit the number of government subsidized loans where there is no real job market.

I can see the point of view from which you are arguing but that would be pretty hard to enforce. First, you would have to create more bureaucracy to monitor all of that and secondly who gets to decide what is and isn't an important degree and on what basis?

Look at what degrees we have that people can't find jobs in put a quota on subsidizing those programs. This isn't rocket science and the money we saved paying for people to get vanity degrees would more then pay for the extra cost.

BTW, I am still for mandatory military service for all capable adult males for two years. If we wanted as a nation to whip our youth into shape and teach them to be responsible what better way than basic training and an MOS? :P

All un-fit youth (and females who don;t want to do military service) could do an internship elsewhere for one to two years for law enforcement or charity.

We could even work in some kind of mandatory GI Bill sign-up for that period so that they would have some college money to pay for their schooling when they were done.

Sorry but that is a horrid idea. We have a strong, motivated, well paid all voluntary military now. To do what you are talking about we would have to expand the military by about 10X lower the salary and reduce the quality of equipment. All we would get out of it is larger but less effective military with lower pay and less equipment. We would have to lower standards so everyone could get in and then most of them would spend all their time goofing off and complaining about how poorly they are being treated and delay how many of them start their life and becoming contributing members of society by two years.

Now if you want to say they have accumulated a certain amount of debt to the society that can be repaired in a variety of volunteer programs such as community service I might agree. We could use a few million twenty years doing clean up in the inner cities more then we could use an extra ten million carrying guns.

*Yes, before anyone says so, I know the benefits of an all-volunteer force. It is a two edged sword of sorts because morale would probably go down some with mandatory service. But, I think the overall benefits to our nation would be more than sufficient to compensate for the road to shit our youth are going down now.*

I think you may be over estimating the benefits of being a conscript. Trying to force a person to get the benefits of military service is like trying to force addicts to get the benefits of drug rehab. The desire to be there is critical.
