Although, given the college-for-all situation you describe, it's getting to be that a bachelor's is the new high school diploma.

and talking about how people are wasting their money in college and all, one would think you'd also criticize the whole "law school requires a bachelor first" system that forces American students to spend several years of time and in many cases large amounts of money on a degree that is merely supposed to be background for their law studies. Surely that is even more of a waste than getting a BA in humanities and then nothing else, considering that such a BA does constitute a serious advantage on the labour market over people who don't have it, even in jobs that don't have much to do with the humanities you studied.

And that's without even going into the topic of the general requirements in American colleges.
For professional programs like Law and even Medicine, having degrees in English/History/Philosophy/Classics or Bio/Chem are only marginally useful for day-to-day work. But they are a way of weeding out the dedicated/gifted... or so the Admissions Offices would have us believe.
