As for the "English degrees teach you to think" comment: you're missing the most important word in that much-used phrase - critically. One of the reason's it's a "good" degree to do if you've got no set idea of a career path is that it teaches you critical analysis of ideas. Most big firms love that.
But this... what major doesn't teach you to think critically? Mathematics and sciences certainly do. Languages do. Economics does. I can't think of any major which doesn't rely heavily on critical thinking. Now, scientists aren't going to be deconstructing the thematic unity of feminine portrayals in Eliot or what have you, but their courses are fairly heavy on the critical thinking in their own way.
Come to think of it, International Relations doesn't rely on critical thinking much.
EDIT: Actually, International Relations doesn't rely on much of anything.
"We feel safe when we read what we recognise, what does not challenge our way of thinking.... a steady acceptance of pre-arranged patterns leads to the inability to question what we are told."

It's a column, not a real article... and it's more critical than you suggest.

Same. Humanities, while necessary, are something of a luxury given the numbers. *NM*

I don't see the point in a humanities major if you aren't planning to get more than a bachelor's.
