But this... what major doesn't teach you to think critically? Mathematics and sciences certainly do. Languages do. Economics does. I can't think of any major which doesn't rely heavily on critical thinking. Now, scientists aren't going to be deconstructing the thematic unity of feminine portrayals in Eliot or what have you, but their courses are fairly heavy on the critical thinking in their own way.
Sure they do, but it's a different kind of critical thinking, and the English Lit kind is the kind most useful to the ideas machine of big firms, especially Marketing departments. And I wouldn't have believed it so much myself if it weren't for all of the job vacancies on our internal website which use "English Literature" as the example for a useful degree in the "Desirable" section. I work for a FTSE-100 company.
Actuarial departments like physicists, though.
Come to think of it, International Relations doesn't rely on critical thinking much.
EDIT: Actually, International Relations doesn't rely on much of anything.
