just some words are different here and there. The basic vocab, structure and grammar is all the same.

In terms of writing, I took an introductory Hindi course (I am Indian-Pakistani, but born and brought up in Canada, so I knew the language but not the writing) and written Hindi is not very complicated. I think Urdu would be more difficult. But they are completely different from one another.

IT might be useful to learn Hindi just to get a hang on the speaking part. You can always write the words in the english alphabet, until you are able to find something useful for learning the URdu script.
