That's informative, thanks, but I'm not sure it really changes anything.
Joel Send a noteboard - 19/08/2010 03:27:05 PM
The area already had two mosques operating in it. The first was opened in 1970 and the other in 1985. Not too long ago one of the congregations, I don't remember which, lost all or part of their leased space, leaving them with facilities capable of accommodating just 20% of the worshipers at any one time. So they set to secure a new place not too far away. Also, the damaged building (the landing gear from one of the planes fell through the roof) is already serving as a place of worship. I believe it has been doing so since before this whole brouhaha was manufactured.
It's hardly surprising that Midtown Manhattan has its share of mosques; last I checked, the metro population of NYC was estimated at around 20 million (i.e. were it a state it would rank 4th in population, just ahead of FL. ) The difference is none of those were built after 911 as an overt attempt at Islamic damage control. How many people are protesting those other mosques? How many people in TX are posting about them online?
The problem is this mosque has an agenda, one at least as political as it is religious. I dunno, maybe the far right will learn from this the disgust I feel when they try to wrap reprehensible things in the bloody shirts of fallen soldiers (though I doubt it. ) Because I think that really is the core problem here: No one wants 911 reduced to an example of how decent Muslims were unfairly maligned by a fringe element, because, believe it or not, not everyone hurt that day was a Muslim. Some probably feel trying to show the touchy feely side of Islam via the site where their child or parent or spouse was brutally murdered is a bit insensitive, insulting and self absorbed. It's not malicious, understand, just INCREDIBLY short sighted.
