If that's the case why is this Islam community center even an issue? It obviously is about Islam, because if it was any other religious community center there would be no controversy.

Because putting a specifically Islamic church and community center right next to the place thousands were murdered in the name of Islam, and putting it there with the expressed intent of showcasing Islams humanitarian non-violent beliefs MAKES it about Islam. It's kind of hard to avoid when I have to use the word "Islam" three times in one sentence to fully describe what they're doing. The actual terrorism only gets one mention, but Islam, three; what's the clear focus there?

I'm very sorry, Muslims of NYC, but not everything's about you. I strongly believe that for most Americans, including those who lost friends and family on 911, the Islamic faith of Manhattan Muslims is irrelevant. As irrelevant as it was to the hijackers.

It seems clear to me that the idea here was to distance mainstream Islam from the violence of a very few radicals. How well has that worked...?
