Growing up Catholic we never cared about Bible-thumpers. I still don't know who the last guy is and hope to remain ignorant because they're all a bunch of idiots.

Maybe. They pretty much built the country though, and, as I noted elsewhere, their influence on both the political left and right remains strong. The last guy has a modern name sake who's run for President a few times, and that campaign was built around a history of social justice founded on scripture, a history that's older that's existed in the United States longer than the United States itself has existed. I can see why you'd ignore something so trivial that it gave birth to the American Revolution, abolition and the turn of the century labor movement (and you've studied the third Great Awakening, I'm sure; remember the Cross of Gold?) Bearing in mind the survey found that about half of all Catholics know (a lot) less about transubstantiation than I, maybe ignorance isn't a selling point. ;)

I think in history classes outside the US the topic is omitted altogether. *NM* - 01/10/2010 11:36:41 AM 418 Views
I'm fairly sure it isn't seen as a must know in the British educational system *NM* - 01/10/2010 11:42:07 AM 451 Views
Quite. And certainly not in New Zealand. *NM* - 01/10/2010 11:55:27 AM 437 Views
I'm sure you're right, but it shouldn't be, because the formative influence was/is huge. - 01/10/2010 01:15:09 PM 1142 Views
Well, in university level American history courses, I'm sure it's mentioned. - 01/10/2010 01:20:56 PM 1036 Views
I think when a country becomes a world power you need to cover more of its past. - 01/10/2010 02:00:54 PM 1062 Views
Depends on how much that past mingles with yours. - 01/10/2010 02:08:35 PM 1090 Views
Seems more like it depends on how the present mingles. - 01/10/2010 02:21:56 PM 977 Views
Well. Not so much. - 01/10/2010 02:28:55 PM 940 Views
I can see NZ taking that view, sure. - 01/10/2010 03:11:21 PM 1083 Views
But more important, I would stay, is understanding your own country - 01/10/2010 02:34:22 PM 1152 Views
That last certainly seems to be NZ's point of view. *NM* - 01/10/2010 02:34:59 PM 475 Views
