So they blow everybodys curve, eh? Joel Send a noteboard - 01/10/2010 01:52:33 PM
The title "US Religious Knowledge Quiz" is regrettably ambiguous. Is it about American knowledge of religion, or knowledge of American religion? Apparently the latter, based on the last five questions, which are the only really difficult ones. That said, there are enough variations of two of the possible answers to the nirvana question that I think either of them ought to qualify, though it is more closely associated with one of them. And if you'd paid more attention to my oft stated reasons for admiring a certain US politician (until he was proven a liar) the last one would've been much easier. :P It's definitely Americocentric though; I wouldn't have gotten one of them if I hadn't graduated from a US public HS. Heck, for most of this decade the fundie right insisted that kids were being kicked out of school for reading their bibles silently. Aaaah, it's like having my heart ripped out cell by cell.... :[

Asking about the religion of the Dalai Lama, for instance, and for that matter Mother Teresa never had much to do with the US either. So it really is American knowledge of religion, but yes, with some Americocentric questions that make it rather less evident for foreigners to attain perfect scores than for Americans. Though it would appear attaining perfect scores isn't as evident as it ought to be, looking at the results...

Honestly, I'm trying not to think about it. For one thing, it leads me back to that apostasy the GOP pulled on the Southern Baptists, in MY hometown, and if that weren't bad enough I have to witness what it's doing to my country. Again I'm reminded of that line about how letting the most passionate have their way sounds wise until you realize it encourages people to be passionate when they don't have all the facts. One group in particular here has evidently made a conscious decision to not only embrace that, but teach it.

I'm fairly sure it isn't seen as a must know in the British educational system *NM* - 01/10/2010 11:42:07 AM 362 Views
Quite. And certainly not in New Zealand. *NM* - 01/10/2010 11:55:27 AM 380 Views
I'm sure you're right, but it shouldn't be, because the formative influence was/is huge. - 01/10/2010 01:15:09 PM 977 Views
Well, in university level American history courses, I'm sure it's mentioned. - 01/10/2010 01:20:56 PM 911 Views
I think when a country becomes a world power you need to cover more of its past. - 01/10/2010 02:00:54 PM 908 Views
Depends on how much that past mingles with yours. - 01/10/2010 02:08:35 PM 934 Views
Seems more like it depends on how the present mingles. - 01/10/2010 02:21:56 PM 860 Views
Well. Not so much. - 01/10/2010 02:28:55 PM 829 Views
I can see NZ taking that view, sure. - 01/10/2010 03:11:21 PM 950 Views
But more important, I would stay, is understanding your own country - 01/10/2010 02:34:22 PM 1006 Views
That last certainly seems to be NZ's point of view. *NM* - 01/10/2010 02:34:59 PM 394 Views
