You think bookstores are populated primarily by intelligent employees, while other businesses are filled with morons?

I think he specified small, specialized bookstores. A place with an owner and maybe two to three employees. A small group working on something they are knowledgeable about, are invested in and have a passion for. Whereas you might encounter more disinterested, ignorant employees at a chain filling spots on the floor. Online shopping doesn't actually eliminate the morons (the guy picking your book off the shelf at the Amazon distribution center doesn't have a particular concern over the accuracy of your filled order, he has a 130 item an hour quota to speed through)... but at least you don't have to talk to the guy.
