First we have to get a marriage license or some such, where we have to list our intention to get married. This has to happen 14 days prior to the marriage (max is 1 year prior). I think this is to prevent spur of the moment decisions, and to allow officials to check whether or not people are abiding by the laws (e.g. they're not married to someone else already).
