I'd rather this, than be humiliated in public by my relations' behavior.
It was particularly difficult for my wife to get up in front of everyone and thank my family for being so kind and welcoming when the hostility radiating from the table my mother's family seated at was blatantly obvious to everyone else. I actually had people come up to me later and tell me that I was "moving up in the world" by marrying my wife.
My sympathies.
I always thought my family was nuts.
