I read a reaction time study synopsis that was included in an article (I want to say it was on ESPN.com or ESPN the Magazine) where it turns out that an 18-20 year-old elite athlete is significantly slower in reaction time than a 25-28 year-old elite athlete. Considering average football players gain 20-60 lbs. of muscle between the end of their senior year of HS and the end of their collegiate career, hardly any HS players are ready for the sport.
Basketball players used to be able to enter the NBA draft upon HS graduation, but for every LeBron there were hundreds of talented HS hoops players who either went undrafted or couldn't make it in the NBA, despite being drafted on their "upside" rather than their accomplishments. That's why they have to wait until one year after HS graduation before they can declare for the draft.
