Re: Probably best not to count the wedding present Vivien Send a noteboard - 11/04/2011 01:20:24 AM
The friends I know who did it were very clear that they didn't want wedding presents, since as far as they were concerned travelling to their wedding was a wedding present from the guests. I agree with them on that and would think it fairly obnoxious to expect a present on top of attending.

Well they don't get a holiday *out of it*, they're forced to use both their vacation time and vacation money for it, and that's not even counting the wedding present. I think it's really irresponsible to ask other people to spend money like that, unless everyone you want at your wedding is loaded and would not mind.

Well yes they do very much get a holiday out of it - perhaps we have different definitions of "holiday"?

Yeah. Vacation time is quite precious in the US. Average number of paid vacation days in the US, counting paid holidays- 15. Remember, that's counting holidays, so you can't shift those around. For professionals, it's typical to have 2 weeks of paid vacation time in addition to a few holidays.

At my place of employment, the vacation policy was fairly generous. I had 4 (I think) paid holidays, 4 floating holidays, and 10 days vacation. The floating holidays are not as great as they sound because I would forget that a floating holiday is coming up, I'd forget to put in the request for the vacation day in time, and then I'd be stuck spending hours and hours commuting on these holidays because public transportation is awful on holidays.

I didn't even go on any long vacations when I was working. There were some long weekends where I'd take a friday or monday off but generally I also wound up taking vacation day every other month or so just to catch up on errands and go to the dentist/doctor and stuff like that.
