This site has what, 10% or so percent of wotmania's activity in its heyday?
Larry Send a noteboard - 10/05/2011 10:45:51 PM
The vast majority of those complaining about normal forum styles don't regularly frequent other sites.
Could that possibly be a result, not a cause, of our attitude to their message board formats?
But based on anecdotal evidence over the years, quite a few who complain most vociferously just don't seem engaged with other communities and that certainly does impact intermingling with other sites in that there isn't much "pull" for them to come visit here.
Another anecdote: whenever I link (email, Twitter, blog) to this site, I frequently get the comment about the "archaic", "confusing," or "frustrating" layout. There is something to that, I suppose.
You missed my point. It was that one of the reasons why we are here, not there, is that this is the layout that we are comforable with. If RAFO were to become like them, there would be little point in having a separate page, as we might as well all congregate at those other places.
I just decided to note the insularity behind that viewpoint. This place at times reminds me of a knitting circle, full of old companions that sit about talking in much the same way most days. The problem with that? The old people die off, eventually. Activity levels here are down nearly 50% since late 2009 on all the boards and that can't be attributed to a "wait for the next book to come out."
I just don't think this format is going to be viable for much longer, if it has been viable for a while now.
I like knitting circles. What I detest is the homogenisation of the internet. The fact that everyone else is doing something does not require us to do the same. Quite the contrary. There would be little point in yet another website like all the others. The RAFO layout makes room for a very specific type of discussion which other sites do not allow for.
People have been calling this layout unviable since my first years at wotmania. Somehow, we are still around. And I have no intention of dying yet .
What's funny is that I think of the conversations here has becoming more homogeneous, or stale might be a better word, due to the lack of activity and the continued shrinking of active members. Some might see it in a different light, but I really don't see the antipathy to having a more "standard" format. None of the sites I visit that utilize UBB-type formats resemble each other much. All I have to do is look at the relative variety at Westeros compared to here. When I joined that site, it was roughly coequal with wotmania in size. It has continued to increase over the past 5.5 years, while late wotmania/RAFO shrunk. I suspect due to a mixture of user/admin apathy, site closure, non-standard format, and lack of appealing "extras" (such as click-friendly HTML tags, not to mention content outside of a bunch of people jawing back and forth), things have dropped off and things have become a bit stale.
Only benefit to this is that the asinine "elders/midbies/newbies" comments have died off.
