It always bugs the heck out of me when people take what sounds like well-rehearsed arguments and direct them at me. It's also an old and silly talking point, religion, tradition, etc are at the core of every legal system that's ever existed. The reason I think it's a rehearsed argument is because you're busy trying to lecture are committed gay rights supporter on the importance of gay rights because that person said they think it's optimal to pass these things in straight up or down votes by the populace. I find it kind of bewildering to defend my commitment to democracy and personal liberty.
