I said Akins comments needed MORE context. Joel Send a noteboard - 23/08/2012 08:50:09 PM
I dunno, I think that saying "this comment needs context" after context has been mentioned in the OP is kinda funny. I also think that saying "publicly saying what most of his party believes?" is crazy, given that the really fucking idiotic bit was: "from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something."

As I noted, Akins "OP" gave some, but not enough. Calling something rape does not mean it is; there is nothing outrageous in that.

It is silly of Joel to skip that that is what's causing the reaction. If he wants to again point out the "most of what his party believes" line that he loves so much, talk about that. Don't try to pretend that there is no massively ridiculous content in the comment.

A federal ban on rape, without exception, is in the GOP platform, nossy. EVP today reached the same conclusion I did: "While virtually every powerful Republican from Mitt Romney on down has called on Akin to resign his nomination, now the platform committee is committed to exactly the same thing Akin proposed. This makes it quite clear that they aren't actually against what he said, just the way he worded it." Maybe that is just pandering but they really truly mean it—honest!—when stating views you share; the opposite is at least as likely. I suggest examining the platform party members and leaders approved to see how much you support, because odds are it reflects what President Romneys policies would be (that is, after all, why platforms exist.)

Most of the party shares Akins views, if not necessarily for the same reasons. When he introduced the Sanctity of Life Act defining zygotes as "persons" with all pursuant constitutional protections, VP nominee Paul Ryan co-sponsored it: What does that suggest? The "shutting down" claims are from a book by anti-abortion doctor John Willkes, whom Romney met with earlier this year, after which the doctor announced "99% agreement" with Romney. Ryan has also met with him, responding to his views by stating, "That's where I'm at." That is where the GOP is at; the question is not if they believe it, but if it matters. You tell me.... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/us-election/9493653/US-election-Mitt-Romney-met-Todd-Akin-doctor-John-Willke-during-2012-campaign.html

I'm sure you're tired of reading now, but re: Assange, those comments are dismissive of the rights of the female, and I don't think it is "overreacting" to flag them as excessively stupid. I would smack the shit out of my husband if he refused to stop doing something I didn't like, so I don't find it hard to believe that a woman might feel "raped" while saying no to someone making his own choices about her body. I don't think you bankrupt the term unless you can first prove that the woman had approved that particular episode of sex.

If she withdrew consent during sex it was rape, but Galloway did not deny that. Only those present know if she did, but presumption of innocence applies to rape.

How is "constitutional abortion ban, no exceptions" different from Akins position?

No, the logics invalidity does that, though you do not seem to like its conclusion either. - 24/08/2012 07:48:21 AM 763 Views
