As I noted, Akins "OP" gave some, but not enough. Calling something rape does not mean it is; there is nothing outrageous in that.
Unless you say something about some sort of mental handicap, you're really not adding context; you're changing the subject.
"Shut down" was a bit absurd, but he only repeated what he heard from a doctor, albeit one with an agenda. "Legitimate" may or may not be ridiculous, depending on whether he was alluding to false claims (and how he defines them) or something else. The interview provides some context, but not enough to answer that.
A federal ban on rape, without exception, is in the GOP platform, nossy. EVP today reached the same conclusion I did: "While virtually every powerful Republican from Mitt Romney on down has called on Akin to resign his nomination, now the platform committee is committed to exactly the same thing Akin proposed. This makes it quite clear that they aren't actually against what he said, just the way he worded it." Maybe that is just pandering but they really truly mean it—honest!—when stating views you share; the opposite is at least as likely. I suggest examining the platform party members and leaders approved to see how much you support, because odds are it reflects what President Romneys policies would be (that is, after all, why platforms exist.)
Holy crap. Please stop treating me like I do not know stuff. Of course I have thoughts on it, but we aren't talking about his definition of rape, so please stop hijacking this discussion. His comment re: the female body can be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard w/o me having to jump on the REPUBLICANS HAVE A PLATFORM I DON'T LIKE soapbox.
His comments on the female body "shutting down" rape-pregnancy come from Dr. Willkes' book. The GOP platform may not share that view, but its presidential ticket does (despite their attempts to create distance,) so either there is no problem, or it is bigger than Akins.
