From what I've read, his "doctors" was one doctor - the long discredited Dr Wilke who relies on his own estimates in the face of actual scientific research which has shown that women are at least as likely if not more likely to become pregnant as a result of being raped. Akin might not have plucked it from thin air, it seems he did though blindly accept the word of the only doctor who was willing to do so. That Akin was willing to speak out in public with no apparent attempt to actually verify the claim on such a serious issue really is not good at all.
