That is one possibility. Increased use of biotechnology and understanding of how food affects health would make agriculture even more business focused. It's not necessarily a terrible thing.
biotech and gmo food is not exactly the same thing, though... you don't have to change dna to study health benefits, and developing better crops via breeding and grafting biotech isn't that. agribusiness has all but trashed the small time farmer. and understanding the way in which food effects health isn't about gmo food, unless we're talking about whether or not gmo food adversely effects health. we don't have any data for the long term effects of ingesting gmo food on people.
GMO is only a small part of biotech, yes. Fermentation is an ancient practise and that is bio tech, too. Enzymes are also biotech, though the organisms that produce them can be genetically modified. It's atrocious for anyone to think GMO equals biotech.
When I mentioned food and health I was actually thinking about nutrigenomics (how food affects gene expression) and medicalization. We already have functional foods and "superfoods" (I hate that word), it's not a huge leap of faith to think that the line between food and medicine may get a bit blurry in the future.
Indeed. Better processing of food and better packaging technology is definitely needed. But with crops being used for making biofuel and people in some developing countries starting to shift towards a more western diet I'm sure we also need an increase in food production.
you should totally check out henry rollins' h is for hunger.
Food Wars: The Global Battle for Mouths Minds and Markets is very informative. It's also terribly dry but if you're really interested I suggest you check it out. You can read the first pages at Amazon.com.
I'd be interested in knowing what you guys think about organic food

I think organic food is a luxury that few will want as food prices increase in the coming decades.

I think the organic movement is mostly a big scam: an excuse to charge more money for less food.

Actually, I believe the "no pesticides" part predates the "no GMOs" part.
