Sorry but that is a ludicrous argument. If legalising a fairly simple operation would save, say, ten lives a year, would you oppose it?
-Ireland does not allow abortion for any reason
-England does allow abortion for any or no reason
-Ireland has a LOWER maternal death rate than England
If the "life of the mother" argument was anything but rare to the point of irrelevance, Ireland would have a higher maternal death rate, not a lower one.
There are far too many other factors for this statistic to have any meaning. You also need to bear in mind that Ireland isn't a closed off country - in one year 7,000 women travelled, mostly to England, to have abortions. No idea on the numbers for illegal abortions...
